The theme of the 2017 NAEA Museum Ed pre-conference day was Diversity & Inclusion: Art Museum Educators at Levers of Change. Marit Dewhurst and Keonna Hendrick delivered the keynote, “Breaking the Silence of Racism in Museums,” outlining how we can have the conversations that can begin to confront systems of white supremacy in museum education so that everyone can feel welcome in the workplace.
Watch their presentation, starting 30 minutes in, on this video.
I saw Keonna present again, later in the conference, alongside Melissa Crum - with a workshop called “Developing Self-Reflection to Create Culturally Inclusive Learning Spaces. As part of their workshop process, they had each of us in the room think about an experience that made us feel good about our race and one that made us feel bad about our race. This self-reflection becomes the basis for further discussion.
We just got a taste of what could be a useful ongoing process for any workplace and an essential one for educators.
