Catalyzing Institutional Change Through Socially Engaged Art at the Guggenheim

Notes from a session at the Museum Education pre-conference day of the 2017 National Arts Education Association convention in New York City.
When the Guggenheim Museum worked with the Rothschild Foundation to help produce the social practice art project, A Circle Through New York, the education department became involved in the curation of the piece. It seems that the art project, conceived by Lenka Clayton and Jon Rubin, was effective in shaking up the power structure in the museum.
After sitting at a board room table for a discussion with some brilliant people, I stumbled out into the museum and “Can’t Help Myself,” by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. Yes, a major benefit of joining the museum education pre-conference is the museum access.
Earlier in the day, I enjoyed some time at The Met, where the keynote speech took place, and where we all joined a session in one of the galleries. I got to take a close look, and really enjoy, a room in the museum I may have otherwise glossed over. I certainly enjoyed the ancient Assyrian art more thanks to the way Habeer prepared us.
