I had a lousy internet connection during this event, so I’m sure I missed some details. If you were there, you might have seen me in the chat advocating that we have a special election to approve a tax on those who have benefited most during the pandemic to provide funding for those who have suffered most. This meeting has confirmed what I have been observing, that the city’s recovery task force has identified where there is need and where funding would have the most impact. Now it’s just a question of having a surge of political will to insist that anyone who has added millions and billions of dollars to their bank accounts pay for the rest of us to be able to survive, thrive, and create.

Mayor London Breed and Director of the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development Joaquin Torres each spoke near the beginning of the meeting. While their attendance and words did demonstrate genuine support and belief in the profound importance of the arts to the city, they could have displayed greater leadership by coming to the end of the meeting to listen.

I appreciate how this meeting was organized. We were given a chance to select from 5 break-out rooms which were each well-facilitated by strong leaders. This gave everyone a chance to provide input by talking and by adding to an open and active chat bar. When we returned to the main room, representatives from each group (who had been designated before the meeting) reported back.

I came away from the event with a very warm and fuzzy feeling for this local arts community.
