Love the Richmond, Love the Balboa Theater
The Balboa Theater is a great example of how art can bring a community together. For several years now, the TotalSF podcast has used this Richmond District stalwart as the venue for their screenings of San Francisco based movies. Even as pandemic times has made these movie screening go virtual, the theater continues to be a hub for the community.
On February 13, the Richmond Family Transportation Network added to the fun by organizing a Ride N’ Roll Slow Streets Art Hunt to help people notice and appreciate how much fun can be had when we dedicate street space to pedestrians and art. They timed it so that when people were done hunting for art along neighborhood slow streets, people could buy popcorn at the Balboa Theater and then go home to stream “Always Be My Maybe” for the Total SF viewing party.
I really appreciate Alec Hawley for commissioning a painting of a car-free JFK drive and collecting art from a number of artists to give as gifts to unknown neighbors. I’m glad to learn that my painting, “River of Joy” was found and given a lovely home.
“Always Be My Maybe” is an adorable rom com that features The Richmond, so the theater marquee reads, “I Love The Richmond” (as in #ILoveTheRichmond), and the movie’s poster is in the display case.
