Tracking Data and Working in Groups for AEMP
San Francisco Unified School District has had an Arts Education Master Plan in place for 11 years, but we certainly haven’t achieved art for every student, every school, every day. The Arts Education Master Plan Steering Committee is working to figure out the next steps.

I attended this meeting as a member of the public. Meeting times, minutes, and agendas have not been posted online for the past year - I have been assured that this is a technical issue which will be fixed.

First, representatives from the Public Education Enrichment Fund presented their plans for gathering data about which students actually get arts education. The process is more complicated than you might expect, what with so much of arts ed being provided by non-profits. They will need to figure out how to include data about after school arts and don’t expect to be able to track arts integration beyond anecdotal evidence. There is no mention of even beginning to measure what arts are being taught in middle and high schools.

Next, Dr. Brent Stephens, SFUSD Chief Academic Officer, to bring greetings from the superintendent and the Board of Education. The Arts Education Master Plan Steering Committee will be invited to present on the status of the plan at board meetings early in the new year and in the spring. To that end, the committee was broken up into 3 working groups: (1) Administrative Leadership and Resource/Staffing, (2) Professional Development and Partnerships/Collaborations, (3) Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.

Those of us without formal seats on the committee were invited to participate in the working groups and members will be reaching out to more community members to participate in the process over the coming months.

Follow the #AEMP tag for more about this committee.
