The Visitors’ Turn to Play

Julia Charles of SFMOMA and consultant, Susan Becker, present a workshop about Touring Contemporary Art for docents and educators at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. 

When we educators tour a museum, we need to remember that while we’ve taken deep dives to find meaning in the art, but this is the first time that the visitors are getting to play that game. While we might want to give them answers to their questions, they’ll have a more interesting experience if we let them work out their own answers. 

And if we aren’t careful with our phrasing, we are liable to shut the whole conversation down.
