One of the more challenging transitions from teaching artist to art teacher (so far) has been assessment. As a teaching artist I had understanding goals for my students, and I evaluated how we did at the end of each residency. I’m trying to make that same model work for my students now, but there’s something about the “Is this for a grade?” question that feels like they’re losing sight of what’s important. I’m trying to get my students to contribute to the rubric we’ll be using for our critiques, and I’m hoping that we can make that work.
