July is for Music in the Parks

It’s summer time in the city and we we get to enjoy events in our parks. I brought my picnic blanket and sketchbook to see several shows with friends.

On July 7, I was enchanted by Eva Salina and Peter Stan playing Balkan Romani songs at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. You’ll certainly want to take a look at their whole schedule. I wasn’t the only one sketching this performance. After the show I found that Cristina Ibarra, Strategic Projects Director for the festival, also made a drawing of the musicians.

On July 14, I returned to Yerba Buena to see the Alaya Project combine “the intricate Carnatic style of Indian classical music and contemporary jazz and funk".” As always, I tried to capture some of the feeling of the music with my scribbles.

You can see these guys enjoy sketches by the design of their upcoming album.

San Francisco celebrated the opening of a brand new park on July 17, 2022. The Presidio Tunnel Tops park is built above a busy highway to connect the Presidio and Crissy Fields. The view of the bay is spectacular and served as a great backdrop for performances which culminated in an appropriately festive show by the Brazilian Carnaval dance and percussion company, Fogo Na Roupa. I drew their leader, Metzi Quetzal, when I sketched all of the “Mujerx En Acción/Womxn Who Lead” Paseo Artístico event for Mission Local in 2021.
